Wooden tortoise habitat

A slow afternoon, kept in a small wooden world.

A wooden tortoise hideaway with a domed roof, a heat-lamp stand (no real heat), and two hand-painted tortoises — a mum and a baby. The walls fold open like a stable door; the floor has a felt-lined warm-spot under the lamp. Built around the quiet, careful play that tortoises invite.

Ages & how it’s used

Made for ages 4 and up. Children park the tortoises under the lamp, take them out to ‘eat lettuce’, walk them across the desk. We’ve seen it used as a quiet desk companion at homework time.

Dry-cloth the hideaway and tortoises. The felt disc lifts out and can be vacuumed or shaken outside. Avoid soaking; the wooden hinge on the fold-open wall is glued.

No — it’s a wooden carving on a stand. Decorative, no bulb, no batteries, no warming function.

Is the baby tortoise a choking hazard?

At 3 cm, it is sized for ages 4+ and is not appropriate for under-3s.

Does the front wall really fold?

Yes, on a small wooden hinge. The wall folds flat so the inside is reachable for small hands.

Is the paint safe?

Water-based, food-grade, lead-free. Sourced to meet ASTM F963.
