Hand-painted wooden trug

A small Devon trug for real & pretend gathering.

A wooden trug in the old Sussex shape, hand-painted with summer mushrooms and bramble berries, a felt-lined inner pocket, and a stubby wooden penknife on a strap. The handle is sized for a five-year-old’s hand. Heavy enough to carry an apple or a fistful of acorns; light enough to wave overhead on the way back from the meadow.

Ages & how it’s used

Made for ages 4 and up. Children use it for pretend foraging in the playroom or for real gathering in the garden — small stones, fallen petals, a bird feather. The wooden knife sits in a felt pouch and slides out for ‘cutting’ pretend stems.

Is the penknife sharp?

No. It is a blunt-tipped wooden carving made for pretend cutting. There is no metal blade anywhere on this trug.

Can it carry real things from the garden?

Yes — petals, leaves, small stones, an apple or two. We do not recommend filling it with wet things; the paint isn’t a varnish.

Is the paint safe?

Water-based, food-grade, lead-free. Sourced to meet ASTM F963.

How big is it?

Roughly 24 cm long, 14 cm wide, 11 cm deep including handle. Light enough for a four-year-old to carry one-handed.
